According to various sources there are various theories about the creator of the Walled city of Lahore.Among all these theories the most popular is that during the reign of the great emperor Akbar, the Walled city was constructed by the contemporary governor of Lahore, Malik Ayaz. According to this theory the Walled city of Lahore was a perfectly planned mud fort or in the local language a Kacha Kot.
The walls of the city were destroyed after the British-Punjab war in 1849. The main attraction of the walled city is the 13 grand gates which are as follows:
Akbari Gate
Bhati Gate
Delhi Gate
Kashmiri Gate
Lohari Gate
Masti Gate
Mochi Gate
Mori Gate
Roshnai Gate
Shahalmi Gate
Shairanwala Gate
Taxali Gate
Yakki Gate
Before the start of the British reign all these gates were there demolished but later on with the imitative of the government some of the gates were built. But later on during the riots of 1947, the Akbari Gate and the Shahalmi Gate were burnt down, while the later was reconstructed but the Akbari Gate was never constructed again.
