Lahore Fort, Lahore

Located in the northwestern corner of Lahore, adjacent to the walled city is the Lahore Fort, Lahore. Some of the important sites within the fort that should be seen are: Sheesh mahal, Alamgiri gate, Naulakha pavillion and Moti masjid.

The Lahore Fort, Lahore is 1,400 feet long and 1,115 feet wide. In 1981, the fort was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Shalamar Garden. According to the available historical information, the origin of Lahore Fort, Lahore is obscure. Although there are many discrepancies about the construction of Lahore fort but it is generaly accepted that it was built by Akbar in 1560. It is a culmination of many buildings built over a period of time. The entrance of the fort is through Alamgiri-gate built by Jahangir in 1618. The Diwan-e-Am or Hall of public audience is an open pavillion with 40 pillars built by Shah Jahan in 1631 to shelter hi ssubjects. The marble pavillion and red sandstone balcony at the back of the Diwan-e-Am was originally built by Akbar. Here, the emperor appear daily before the public.

The serpentine sandstone brackets of Lahore Fort, Lahore are typical of Akbar's commissions with the depiction of animals showing Hindu influence and reflecting Akbar's policy of religious tolerence. His two-storey Diwan-e-Khas or Hall of Private Audience was built in 1566 behind the balcony and is reached by stairs on the tight. The Khwabgah-e-Jahangir (Jahangir's room of Dreams) is the main building running the length of the north side of Jahangir's Quadrangle and is typical of Jahangir's period in its austerity. It is now developed into a museum containing a huge model of Taj Mahal. The museum has a good collection of some of the excellent illustrated manuscripts including Akbar Nama, some beautiful calligraphy, good miniature paintings and a collection of Mughal coins.
