The Wazir Khan Mosque, Old City, Lahore is famous for its extensive earthernware tile work. It is often referred as “a mole on the cheek of Lahore”. Starting around 1634-1635 AD it took seven years to complete this church. The mosque was started building during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Wazir Khan Mosque, Old City, Lahore was built by Shaikh llm-ud-din Ansari, a native of Chiniot. He later became the court physician of Shah Jahan and later the Governor of Lahore. He was commonly known as Wazir. The word “Wazir” in Urdu language means minister.

Wazir Khan Mosque, Old City, Lahore is located inside the Inner city and is easily accessible from Delhi Gate. The facade of the mosque is practically covered with kashi and is divided into the usual oblong panels. A beautiful border is carried rectangularly round the center archway and inscriptions in Persian occur in the outer border. The spandrels are filled with extreme fine design. In the right and left of the sanctuary of mosque there are two stately octagonal pillars of an approximate height of 100 feet. On the long sides of the quadrangle are ranged small “khanas” or cells, each closed by the usual Indian two-leaved door set. There are thirteen such cells on each side by a pavilion rising above the general level, containing larger apartments and an upper story that can be reached by two flights of steps. This will give you an access to the roof of the arcading and pavillions.
The pavillions of Wazir Khan Mosque, Old City, Lahore occur in the center of the north and south sides of the lower level of the pavement. In the pavillion on the south there is a famous fountain set in a circular scalloped basin and is served from the main which supplies the tank in the quadrangle.
