Lahore Zoo, Lahore is one of the oldest zoos in the world and it was founded in the year 1872. After the very days of its foundation, which perhaps could have remained as a distant dream without the active contribution from Mr. Lal Mahundra Ram, it was functioning as a volary. But very soon the journey of this zoo started towards prosperity with the tremendous initiation of the zoo authority. The Lahore Zoo started top develop its infrastructure and the collection of animals also increased. Today, the Zoo authority proudly pronounces that the Lahore Zoo is currently a home to more than 1381 creatures of 136 species and this huge collection comprise 49 reptiles of 08, 336 mammals of 45 species and 996 birds of 82 species.

Governance of this prestigious zoo changed for several times and it must be agreed that all the authorities have done the job on their part accordingly and with sufficient perfection. From the year 1872 to 1923 the Lahore Zoo remained under the supervision of the Lahore Municipal Corporation. Aftermath for a period of 39 years(1923-1962) this Zoo was under the management of the Deputy Commissioner of Lahore. For the next 20 yrs, management of this Zoo was entrusted in the hands of the Livestock and Dairy Development Department. On the eve of the celebration of glorious 100 yrs of the Lahore Zoo its management was finally handed over to the Wildlife Department of the country. This place is located almost in the heart of the Lahore city and very easy for the tourists to get access to this place. The botanical garden inside this Zoo is a center of great attraction too and preserves several rare species of trees. After the transfer of the Zoo in the hands of the Wildlife Department several further positive changes occurred within the infrastructure of the Zoo like: better exhibition of the animals, change in the design of the buildings, pattern of the landscape and definitely the administration of this place much better. Moreover after the change in management the Lahore Zoo has now become self-reliant. Among the rare species of animals in the Lahore Zoo you must not miss from watching the following six rare species of animals:
- Nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus)
- Hog deer (Axis porcinus)
- Axis deer (Axis axis)
- Chinkara (Gazella bennettii)
- Blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra)
- Punjab Urial (Ovis orientalis punjabiensis)
