From Eid ul-Adha to Basant celebrations and The Festival of Lamps to Eid ul-Fitr, almost all the festivals and events in Lahore have a specific significance. During these festivals and events in Lahore the entire city, from houses to streets, is illuminated by varied mediums. Though the traditional and worldwide known festivals of Lahore are Eid ul-Adha and Eid ul-Fitr; however there are other festivals and events celebrated in Lahore as well.
The noted Basant celebration, a Punjabi festival, is one of the most colorful festivals of Lahore and attracts large number of tourists from across the globe. Kite flying competition is the main source of entertainment and is loved by one and all. The heartbreaking incidents taking place during this festival have forced the government to ban this event all around the nation. The Festival of Lamps, also known by the name of Mela Chiraghan, is a popular festival of the Lahore city. Just outside the Shalimar Gardens, on the last Friday of the month of March, this grand festival is celebrated.
It is always a pleasure to watch the National Horse and Cattle Show, held at the Fortress Stadium. Colorful folk dances, horse and camel dances and other like performances are witnessed during the evening.
14th of August experiences a grand celebration, in commemoration of the country’s independence. The parades of the Pakistan Airforce and Pakistan Army and other cultural performances are worth watching. During the month of November the World Performing Art Festival is held at the Alhambra cultural complex. This festival of Lahore showcases the rich cultural aspect of the country considerably.
