Basant (Kite Flying) Festival, Lahore

Basant (Kite Flying) Festival, Lahore is a Punjabi festival that marks the beginning of spring. The Basant celebration in Pakistan is centered in Lahore. People from all over the country as well as from abroad come to the city for the annual festivities. Kite flying competition takes place all over the city. The roof top of all houses in the city are crowded with people flying kite.
With the advent of spring Basant festival is clebrated with pomp and show during mid February. In other words, Basant (Kite Flying) Festival, Lahore is a true spring festival of Lahore.

If you are thinking of kite flying as a hindu festival then it is a sheer ignorance. The sport originated in China about 5000 years ago. Lahore is the main focal point for the celebration of Basant (Kite Flying) Festival, Lahore in Pakistan. People traditionally fly kites on the roof tops of their buildings. It is commonly observed that rest houses, hotels and houses of relatives of the participants are fully packed with guests from all over the country. Moreover, some five star hotel of Lahore also arranges for kite flying on their roof top for foreigners and other upper class gentry. They also arranges variety of dishes with musical concert. Inspite of the fact the Basant festival has no link with Muslim culture, it is gaining popularity and is celebrated in Lahore regularly every year with zeal and fervent.

During last year the Basant (Kite Flying) Festival, Lahore has been banned by the court because of the casualties and power installation loss that it causes every year. The ban eas lifted for two days in 2007 and was immediately reimposed as 11 people were killed by celebratory gunfire. Some peopek use metal thread for flying kites. Besids, being a life threat this creates a serious problem for WAPDA when the threat touches the live wires.
